If you enjoy the fried rice you get at hibaci style restaurants, you’re going to LOVE this Blackstone fried rice recipe. It’s so easy to make and just full of amazing flavors.
I absolutely love fried rice, especially when we go out to dinner and the hibaci chefs cook it right in front of us. It’s such a fun experience and the food is always delicious.
We started making fried rice at home on the stovetop years ago, but once we got a Blackstone griddle we really took it up a notch.
Cooking fried rice on the Blackstone is so much fun. The cooking surface is huge which means you can cook enormous servings to feed the whole family. And you get to experiment with all sorts of ingredient options.
Plus you’ll look pretty cool and feel like a real hibaci chef.
What Is Fried Rice?
Fried rice is a traditionally Asian dish consisting of cooked rice that has been stir-fried in a wok or frying pan and mixed with other ingredients such as eggs, vegetables, meat, or seafood.
It can be served as a main dish or as a side dish with other foods. Fried rice is an excellent pairing with grilled Asian salmon.
How To Make Fried Rice On A Blackstone Griddle
Preheat your griddle to medium high heat (aim for about 350° F). Once it’s heated up I’ll usually turn off one of the outside burners and use that section of the cooking surface to use as a warming zone.
Add cooking oil to the griddle and spread around with a spatula.
Add your vegetables on one side of the grill. Start with bigger veggies (broccoli on the Blackstone is delicious) that take longer to cook and work down in size.
On the other side of the grill add cold rice that has already been cooked and cooled. Add olive oil, sesame oil, and soy sauce. Add a small amount of oil or soy sauce to the rice as needed and mix every so often so it fries evenly.
Add your proteins and get them cooking. Bite sized chunks will cook quickly and uniformly.
When everything else is about ready, add beaten eggs to the griddle and scramble them right on the cooking surface.
Mix everything together until well-combined and then remove to a platter and serve immediately.
Tips For Making Blackstone Fried Rice
This Blackstone fried rice recipe is quick and easy to prepare, and it’s also extremely customizable so you can make it your own by mixing in whatever ingredients you like best. In this recipe I use steak and shrimp for protein and a ton of fresh vegetables, but chicken fried rice is another family favorite.
If you don’t like eggs, leave them out. Swap the broccoli out for zucchini. Use scallops or chicken breast instead of shrimp. Add a little lemon juice, oyster sauce or sweet chili sauce. Garnish with come chopped bacon. Give it some extra kick by adding red pepper flakes. The best part of this dish is how many options you have to really make it your own.
Day-old rice works best. Cook the rice the day before you need it and then spread it out on a cookie sheet to cool in the fridge overnight. Cold rice that has been pre-cooked will fry fast and it won’t stick.
I like to use jasmine rice but feel free to use any type of long grain rice you have.
Gather all your ingredients together before starting and work fast. The Blackstone gets hot and this dish cooks really fast. If you have to run back into your house because you forgot something, you might come back to a burned mess. Applying the concept of mise en place could mean the difference between a perfect dinner and a disaster.
You can easily make this Blackstone fried rice recipe friendly for vegans and vegetarians by removing the eggs, meat and seafood. Simply replace them with your favorite vegetables.
Does Fried Rice Have Gluten?
All forms of rice (white, brown, and wild) are naturally gluten free. But fried rice typically contains gluten because one of the ingredients is soy sauce.
You can turn this into a gluten-free Blackstone fried rice dish by eliminating the soy sauce or using a gluten-free version.
How Long Does Fried Rice Last In The Fridge
If stored properly, fried rice will last about four to five days in the refrigerator. Make sure you store it in an airtight container or bag and squeeze as much air out as possible when sealing.
