You’ve just found our review of one of our favorite electric grills: the George Foreman GGR50B indoor/outdoor grill.
Electric grills don’t always get the same respect that their gas and charcoal counterparts do, and that’s not really fair.
An electric grill can never produce the same smokey flavor you get when cooking over an open flame, but I understand why some people choose them.
If you live in an apartment or a town house, your landlord might not allow you to grill with gas or charcoal. And some people just don’t want to deal with the cleanup or having to store the extra fuel when not in use.
Plus, electric grills can be used inside too. So even if there is a blizzard outside, you can still get your grill game on!
The George Foreman GGR50B is compact, affordable, and perfect for grilling meats and veggies both indoor and outdoor. It’s an outstanding option if you’re in the market for an affordable electric grill.
Below we’ll review what we like best about the George Foreman GGR50B, and we’ll also tell you what we’d like to see improved.
Features and Specs
This George Foreman grill is a great option for people who either can’t or don’t want to cook with gas or charcoal.
Putting it together is a piece of cake and you don’t even need any tools. You can literally have this baby out of the box and fully assembled in just a few minutes.
When you’re ready to go, just plug it into any standard electrical outlet. It comes with five temperature settings and the user manual has a handy guide that tells you how long and at what temperature to cook various types of food.
One of the best things about the George Foreman GGR50B is its versatility. You can cook indoors or outdoors, and either with the removable pedestal or without it. With the pedestal it stands about 40 inches tall. Without it you can cook right on your kitchen counter or patio table.
The grill grates themselves are treated with the patented “George Tough nonstick coating” which makes cleaning them easy. They’re dishwasher safe too.
Here’s another neat feature: the grill grates have a couple of small holes in them so that any grease, marinade, or juices can drip through to the grease tray. Make sure you clean the grease tray after each grilling session…if you forget it could overflow and cause a mess!
George Foreman GGR50B – Pros
Here are all the things we think are great about the George Foreman GGR50B indoor/outdoor grill:
Affordability: Grill Flavor at a Great Price
Grills are not cheap and you could easily spend $500 or more on a fancy gas grill or smoker. But the George Foreman GGR50B is one of the best grills under $100. Yep, it costs less than a hundred bucks. And it’s built quite solidly so you’d expect it to cost a lot more than it does. It’s a great bargain.
Plug and Play: No Fuel Required
You can’t beat the flavor of grilling with charcoal, but it makes an awful mess. And of course you need to find a place to store giant bags of charcoal when you’re not grilling. Same goes for propane tanks, they’re huge! But this baby is all electric. Just find an outlet to plug it in and it will be heated up and ready to cook in ten minutes.
Size Matters: You Can Feed an Army
Okay, maybe not an army. But you can comfortably feed a family of four or five. Its 240 square inches of cooking surfaces matches the popular Weber charcoal kettle grill. You’ll have enough space to grill up 15 servings at a time so space is not an issue.
Compact: It Won’t Get in the Way
While this George Foreman grill is big enough to cook up plenty of food, it’s also small enough to stay out of your way. Its minimal footprint means you can tuck it away in a corner on the patio or even on a small balcony.
Landlord Friendly: Apartment Approved
If you live in an apartment, condo, or town house you may not be allowed to use a charcoal or propane grill. But this fully electric grill will give you a great flavor with no fear of flare-ups.
Easy Cleanup: No Muss, No Fuss
The worst part of owning a traditional grill is keeping it clean. Endless scrubbing and scraping the grates is a real pain in the butt. And if you don’t keep it clean you can get dangerous flare-ups. But the George Foreman GGR50B has a heavy duty non-stick surface that is easy to wipe clean. Plus, it has a built-in drip tray to collect excess grease and fat. When you’re finished grilling, just dump it out.
Year Round Grilling: Inside and Out
There’s nothing like grilling outside on a warm summer night, a beer in hand and some juicy burgers or steak on the grill. Nonetheless, the weather doesn’t always cooperate. But with a George Foreman GGR50B you can grill all year round. Day or night, rain or shine, you can grill your heart out.
George Foreman GGR50B – Cons
This wouldn’t be a very fair review if we only told you the good stuff. Here are a few things about this George Foreman grill that we aren’t crazy about:
Best Grill Flavor?
When you’re talking about different types of grills, charcoal delivers the best flavor. Gas is runner up and electric comes in third place. There’s just no way to get that perfect flame-grilled taste with an electric grill. But if you can’t or don’t want to use charcoal or gas, this is one of the best electric grills you’ll find.
Top Heavy
While it has a sturdy build and certainly seems like it will last for many years, I think the design puts too much weight at the top. I fear it could be knocked over if bumped hard enough, so be sure to keep pets and kids away.
What Others Are Saying
As of the writing of this review, the George Foreman GGR50B indoor/outdoor grill has over 3,000 reviews on Amazon and a solid rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.
One user calls it the perfect grill for an apartment balcony and a great option for renters who have a landlord that doesn’t allow gas or charcoal.
A few people complain that the lid is awkward when not in use and that the power cord should be a little longer. But for the most part users agree its easy to clean, provides an even cook, and is a great value for the price.
The Bottom Line
Let’s get this straight:
No electric grill can deliver the same mouth-popping flavor you get when cooking with charcoal or gas. You really need the open flame to get that perfect grill flavor.
But if your heart is set on an electric grill because they’re easier to deal with or because you’re not allowed to use gas or charcoal where you live, the George Foreman GGR50B indoor/outdoor grill is a great choice.
It’s built solidly and is big enough to feed the whole family. It’s small enough to hide in a corner and a piece of cake to clean.
Simply put, it’s versatile, efficient, and affordable.
